The UK government will review the process of tightening visa rules for foreign workers

UK government: With a week left before new restrictions take effect, Number 10 says that the crackdown on foreign worker visas is “under close review.”

UK government

Downing Street announced on Monday that a crackdown on visas for foreign workers is “under close review” in response to concerns that the Home Office has licenced hundreds of new care providers to sponsor foreign workers.

On March 11, new regulations that limit health professionals’ ability to sponsor family members to immigrate to the UK and mandate that carers register with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) will go into effect.

The goal of the government’s actions is to lower immigration to Britain to historic lows.

However, after it was reported that hundreds of licences were given to businesses that are only a few months old and have no prior experience providing care, concerns were raised about fictitious companies sponsoring visas.

A CQC investigation revealed that at least 268 businesses that have never had an inspection have also been given permission to sponsor foreign employees.

Additional visa restrictions are “under close review,” according to the prime minister’s spokesperson.

He declared, “Heavy modifications to curb abuse of the migration system take effect next week.”

These regulations will make it harder for carers to bring in independent contractors and mandate that, in order to sponsor immigrants, carers must register with the Care Quality Commission.

“We closely monitor them, as we do with all of our policies.”

He continued: “We have taken robust action to crackdown on the misuse of the visa immigration system and obviously we will keep further measures under close review.”

This coincides with the fact that, according to data released last week, a record number of foreign health and care workers were granted UK visas last year.

In 2023, 146,477 applicants were authorised to enter the country on health visas; however, the number increased to 349,929 when dependents were included.

From 157,636 in 2022 and 63,291 in 2021, this is an increase.

Organisations cautioned that migrant workers were vulnerable to exploitation because the government was “unwilling” to address low pay in the health sector.

With 600,000 work visas granted last year, the number of people residing in the UK on such permits was also at an 18-year high.

According to the Home Office, carers at home and caretakers have “largely driven” the increase.

In an effort to reduce legal immigration, the government declared last year that there would be a raft of new restrictions on individuals and their families travelling to Britain.

They are as follows:

  •  On March 11, changes that prohibit carers from bringing family members into the UK will take effect.
  •  On the same day, regulations mandating that carers who are sponsoring immigrants register with the Care Quality Commission will go into effect.
  •  Starting on April 4, the minimum salary needed for individuals entering the country on a skilled worker visa will rise from £26,200 to £38,700.
  •  Beginning on April 11, there will be a progressive increase in the minimum income requirement for individuals bringing dependents to the UK under family visas. Starting on this date, employees will need to make at least £29,000 annually in order to bring a family member from overseas, up from £18,600.

Opposition lawmakers, such as London Mayor Sadiq Khan, have attacked the policy, claiming it will put additional strain on the “already-stretched” NHS and social care system.
