What you should know about apprenticeships in the NHS
- You will be paid more than the minimum wage by many NHS employers.
- The National minimal Wage for apprentices is £5.28 per hour, which is the minimal amount you should get if you are 16 to 18 or 19+ and in your first year of an apprenticeship.
- Apprenticeships can be completed in one to five years.
- Anyone above 16 is eligible to complete one.
- You will probably spend the equivalent of four days on a work placement and one day at a training facility or college over the course of a week.
- Your abilities, particularly in algebra and English, will improve.
- You will receive a qualification that combines both knowledge and competence (depending on your job performance) or both types of qualifications.
Levels of apprenticeship
Apprenticeships in the NHS are offered at various levels:
- level 2: GCSE-equivalent
- level 3: the A-level equivalent
- levels 4 and 5, which are at least equal to a foundation degree
- levels 6 and 7, which correspond to a complete master’s or bachelor’s degree
Entry criteria
The type and level of the apprenticeship, as well as the employer, will determine the entry criteria.
To complete a level 3 apprenticeship, for instance, you might require four or five GCSEs in grades 9–4/A–C, or the equivalent. It’s likely that you’ll require A-levels, comparable level 3 certificates, or relevant and adequate experience to begin a level 5 or 6 apprenticeship.

- Level 6 podiatry degree apprenticeship
