A nearly 100,000-strong petition opposing “inhumane” wage increases for Home Office visas. According to one petition, the changes would “punish those who fall in love with someone with a different nationality.”
There are petitions with close to 100,000 signatures asking the Home Office to remove its higher minimum wage requirements for family and foreign worker visas.
Starting on April 4, the minimum salary needed for individuals entering the country on a skilled worker visa will rise from £26,200 to £38,700, as part of the government’s attempt to reduce net migration.
Starting on April 11, the minimum income needed for individuals bringing spouses, partners, and children into the UK under family visas will likewise gradually rise.
Starting on this date, British workers will need to earn a minimum of £29,000 annually in order to bring a family member into the UK; this is a significant increase from the current minimum salary requirement of £18,600.
However, the salary cap for family visas is expected to increase even more, to £34,500, before ultimately hitting £38,700 in 2025.
Opposing the visa changes are more than 92,500 people who have signed petitions on Change.org.
More than 48,000 people have signed a second petition on the government website calling the modifications to family visas “inhumane”.
The petition will be discussed in Parliament if it receives 100,000 signatures.
The petition stated: “The government wants to more than double the financial requirements, which are currently £18,600 per year, to bring your spouse to the UK.
“Most British citizens don’t earn that much annually. We feel that people who fall in love with someone of a different nationality are punished by this policy.
According to the petition, a lot of people might now have to decide between living alone for the rest of their lives or leaving their own nation because they fell in love and are unable to pay for a family visa.
Based on data from the University of Oxford’s Migration Observatory, almost half of UK workers already make less than £29,000, which means they do not make enough money to bring a family member from abroad.
According to the Home Office, the “robust changes” will ensure that those who choose to make the UK their home can afford to do so and will stop abuse of the immigration system. “I’ve been clear that migration is too high and we must get back to sustainable levels,” stated James Cleverly. I laid out a comprehensive plan last year to drastically cut down on immigration, including stricter regulations for care providers, skilled labourers, and ensuring that individuals can support their visiting family members.
“It’s a fair but firm approach that ensures lower migration while giving affected parties time to get ready. The British public is more interested in deeds than words.
“We are delivering the change we promised and which they expect, lifting pressure on public services and protecting British workers with the utmost urgency.”
