Following a recruiting freeze, HSE is authorised to hire around 2,200 personnel.

After a recruitment moratorium, the HSE has been given permission to begin employing more than 2,200 employees, it was revealed yesterday.
According to Health Minister Stephen Donnelly, cash has been allocated for 2,969 more employees this year.

That number is broken down as follows: 701 through the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration, and Youth, and 2,268 for health.

“To Fine Gael TD David Stanton, I have approved the allocation of the new development posts relevant to the health budget,” Mr. Donnelly replied.

“Preparations are underway to hire these 2,268 new employees. The HSE will be able to outline its recruitment goals for each region in 2024 thanks to this.

“It will help local decision-makers make judgements about hiring new employees, moving employees within the health service, and scheduling people who are coming back to work after taking career pauses.

“I also approve the conversion of 418 agency staff to implement safe staffing.”

“While discussions are ongoing, I am, for the most part, in agreement with the HSE Pay and Numbers Strategy (PNS),” the minister continued.

The unresolved matter concerns the management of unfunded positions resulting from over hiring.

“I presented the Government with options for resolving this by the end of March 2024, and my department and the HSE will be able to finalise the PNS once a decision is made.”

Last year, the HSE employed two to three thousand more people than it was authorised to.

Certain grades were not subject to the freeze, including those of doctors enrolled in formal training programmes, graduate nurses, and hospital consultants.

Health unions attacked it, claiming that it interfered with services.

We currently have about 146,429 employees working for our health service, which is 26,617 more than we had at the start of 2020.

Among them are 2,872 physicians and dentists, 4,067 health and social care workers, and 8,414 more nurses and midwives.

The suspension was a component of a series of measures, which also included a directive to cut back on spending on management consultants and agency personnel for the HSE.
