According to data from the Home Office, the number of workers and their families applying for skilled worker, health and care, and student visas decreased from 141,000 in July 2023 to 91,000 last month.

The number of applications for health and care visas each month fell particularly sharply, by 82% to 2,900 in July.

There were 69,500 fewer applications than there were in the UK, a 15% decrease.

The decrease follows stringent visa restrictions implemented by the Tory government led by Rishi Sunak. These measures prohibited the majority of foreign students as well as health and social care professionals from bringing their families to the UK and increased the wage barrier from £26,200 to £38,700.

The Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford has predicted that legal net migration will continue to decline sharply over the next five years, reaching approximately 350,000 by the end of the decade, after reaching an all-time high of 764,000 in 2022. The reasons attributed to this are as follows: a decrease in the number of overseas students, a rise in the number of persons leaving the UK, and a decrease in jobs in the private sector.

It forewarned that the health and social care sectors would experience difficulties filling positions, and that universities would have to cope with the loss of revenue from international students.

In order to provide workers and unions the leverage to bargain for better wages and working conditions, the Labour administration has previously announced intentions for a “fair pay agreement” for social workers.

“We have set out a clear plan to bring down historically high levels of legal migration by tackling the root causes behind high international recruitment,” a Home Office official stated.

“We will make sure we train up our domestic workforce and handle the skills gap by tying immigration, the labour market, and the skills systems together. The UK benefits greatly from immigration, but it must be managed and provided through a just system.
