UK Government tighten dependent visa rules. Families caught in the new rules. Home Secretary praises new visa regulations, but families claim salary changes are “totally impossible.”

New visa regulations that the Home Secretary praised as “protecting British workers” have been met with criticism from activists who say the government is “punishing” families for the changes.: dependent visa rules updates

As new regulations for spouse visas went into effect, James Cleverly declared that “mass migration” had reached a “tipping point”.

To sponsor a loved one to move to the UK from overseas, Britons will now need to make at least £29,000 annually, up from £18,600. This change takes effect on Thursday.

Later this year, the salary level will increase to £34,500, and in early 2025, it will rise to £38,700 once again.

“I promised action, and we have delivered at remarkable speed,” stated Mr. Cleverly. We’ve taken action to reduce unsustainable numbers, safeguard British workers and their income, make sure taxpayers aren’t burdened by people bringing families to the UK, and create an immigration system that the public can rightfully have faith in.

On the other hand, activists claimed the new laws will “destroy the notion of the UK as a place where families can thrive”.

Companies have also cautioned that increasing the salary ceiling will make it “much harder” for them to hire competent workers.

Eugenia Morales, a thirty-year-old Argentine, is concerned about whether the tight new regulations will allow her to follow her husband, Connor White, to England.

The couple has a baby girl who is seven months old and they have been together for three years. Based in West Sussex, Mr. White is a construction worker who has been working extra hours on the weekends to try and increase his income to the necessary amount to sponsor his wife. He has a daughter in England from a previous relationship.

Ms. Morales stated, “We just want to be with our families; we don’t want to be a burden to the (welfare) system.”

It’s a terrible circumstance. It is completely difficult for us to be together and for the girls to grow up together because of this.”

Halifax bus driver Colin Whitley claimed he had been working six-day work weeks to save up enough cash to sponsor his Iranian partner to travel with him to the UK.

“As a British national, why should I have to leave my home country in order to be with the person I’ve fallen in love with? According to the 43-year-old, you are powerless over who you fall in love with.

He continued by saying that if given the opportunity to relocate to the UK, his partner—who is unable to live openly as a gay man in Iran due to local laws—would work and support the country’s economy.

According to the Home Office, the new regulations include protections in case a visa application is denied with unjustifiably severe repercussions.

But according to Caroline Coombs, co-founder of Reunited Families UK, families feel “punished” by the crackdown, and the government has “very high standards” for what qualifies as “exceptional.”

She declared: “The idea that the UK is a nation where families can prosper is destroyed by this rise and the ones that will take effect in the coming 12 months.

“We are dealing with a community of members who feel marginalised and discriminated against by their own government simply because they fell in love with someone from abroad and are unable to earn the ‘right amount’ to be able to love whoever they choose for a variety of reasons, such as taking care of their ageing parents or taking care of their children.”

If Labour wins the general election and becomes power, it has promised to reconsider the amendments.

The actions taken on Thursday are a part of a larger government effort aimed at lowering historically high immigration rates to the UK.

Changes that prohibit carers from entering the UK with family members went into effect on March 11.

On the same day, policies went into effect requiring carers who are sponsoring immigrants to register with the Care Quality Commission.

Beginning on April 4, the minimum wage needed for individuals entering the country on a skilled worker visa was raised from £26,200 to £38,700.
