Job Description

We are searching for a highly structured, sensitive and energetic candidate to join our APOA and Sedation Team as a Band 3 Healthcare Assistant at Great Ormond Street Hospital. You will support the implementation of high quality, child centric, pre-operative evaluation and nurse led sedation services, ensuring excellent communication and seamless operation of clinical and administrative processes across the service.

You will collaborate with anaesthetists, registered nurses, ODPs and multidisciplinary teams across all hospital specialities to ensure children are appropriately assessed, examined and optimised before receiving general anaesthetic or nurse-led sedation.

Main responsibilities of the position

You will work as part of the wider health care team in providing high quality and compassionate care to the child/young people/young person and family and will undertake clinical and non-clinical duties delegated to you by your manager and other registered health practitioners, in accordance with relevant standards, policies and protocols as required:

Work well as a member of a multi-disciplinary team within the APOA and Sedation Team.

To display good communication abilities.

To work within agreed ways of working, under indirect supervision of a registered health care professional (usually a registered nurse), following relevant standards, policies and protocols and always acting within your limits of training and competence.

To be accountable for your own work and to act on the results of your activities. To operate independently within your area of responsibility.

To act as an example of best practice and to supervise others when required.

To display and embody the Trust Values, Expected Behaviours and Core Values of Compassion in Practice (NHS Commissioning Board Dec 2012) and to conform to the GOSH Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers (2013).

Basic Requirements

GCSE (Grade 4 – 9) English and Mathematics or Functional Skills level 2 pass in English and Mathematics or comparable qualification acknowledged

NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care (eg. University Certificate of Competence in Principles of Children & Young People Healthcare, advanced diploma, Higher apprenticeship Level 3) or Healthcare Support Worker Level 2

Evidence of accepted* Care Certificate achievement (*Accepted care certificate achievement must evidence online/workbook component in addition to workplace based skills development and evaluation. (We do not accept Care Certificates completed purely online).

Readiness to do in-house study and to undertake

Please be advised that:

All admin and clerical posts at Bands 2-4 will be subject to a two step recruiting procedure where shortlisted candidates will be required to sit an online literacy, numeracy, ICT and typing test. Only those passing the competency exam will be invited for a formal interview.
