Care Support Worker – UK visa sponsorship
Purpose of the job
To give safe, compassionate and person orientated domiciliary and live-in care to persons in their own homes and in the community. The postholder will be supporting people with a range of needs which may include complex learning disabilities, autism, PEG feeding, spinal cord injury, physical disabilities, acquired brain injury, epilepsy, mental ill health, behaviours that may challenge, long term conditions and palliative or end of life care.
The Care Support Worker will promote choice, dignity, independence, communication, welfare and community involvement, whilst working within the framework of each person’s care plan, risk assessments, clinical protocols and approved outcomes. Before undertaking any clinical tasks, role specific training, competency assessment and authorisation should be completed.
Role’s core principles
Provide person-centred care that recognises the individual’s wishes, strengths, culture, faith, identity and preferred routines.
Enable people to make personal decisions wherever possible and work in compliance with Mental Capacity Act 2005 and best interest protocols.
Use the least restrictive approach, promote positive risk taking, independence and meaningful quality of life.
Work respectfully with families, representatives, advocates and the wider interdisciplinary team whilst preserving professional limits.
Recognise and report changes in physical health, mental health, behaviour, communication, skin integrity, nutrition, hydration or mobility.
Main Responsibilities and Duties
Domiciliary care that is person-centred
Provide consistent help in the service users’ home as per the care plan, visit schedule and risk assessments.
Provide sensitive personal care including bathing, washing, dressing, grooming, oral care, continence care and toileting.
Encourage independence by allowing the person to do what they can safely do, rather than taking over.
Assistance with meal preparation, nutrition, hydration, domestic work, shopping, appointments and community activities as detailed in the care plan.
Respect the person’s home, belongings, privacy, confidentiality and right to refuse care; report refusals or concerns as necessary.
In-home care
Provide planned live-in help in the service user’s home as per the agreed placement rota, care plan, housekeeping routines and professional limits.
Provide ongoing companionship, reassurance and practical help whilst respecting the individual’s privacy, family life, home and right to be alone.
Support with daily living during the placement including personal care, meals, prescriptions, mobility, appointments, activities and domestic tasks as identified in the care plan.
Take agreed breaks and rest periods, in accordance with the placement arrangements.
Conduct a comprehensive handover at each live-in changeover.
Autism and communication in complex learning difficulties
Use preferred communication methods.
Provide predictable routines.
Follow Positive Behaviour Support plans.
Promote social inclusion.
Document behaviour truthfully.
Nutritional, dysphagia and PEG assistance
Only provide PEG related support after authorised training.
Follow the individual enteral feeding plan.
Inspect and care for the PEG site.
Follow Speech and Language Therapy guidelines.
Accurately document feed, fluid and medicines.
Support for physical disability, spinal cord injury
Assist in safe moving, positioning and transfers.
Follow positioning and pressure relief strategies.
Support bowel, bladder, catheter or stoma routines where authorised.
Identify and escalate clinical warning indicators.
Support independence through mobility aids.
Mental health and emotional health
Establish therapeutic relationships.
Support wellbeing and recovery plans.
Monitor and escalate changes.
Respond calmly to distress.
Never employ unauthorised restrictive practices.
Care for palliative and end-of-life
Provide compassionate care.
Assist with comfort measures.
Monitor and report deterioration.
Support families.
Work with community nurses, GPs and hospices.
Medicines and delegated healthcare activities
Follow MAR/eMAR and care plans.
Complete medication records.
Undertake delegated clinical procedures only when authorised.
Never work beyond competence.
Monitoring, documentation and escalation
Complete accurate electronic care notes.
Record care provided.
Follow escalation procedures.
Contact emergency services when necessary.
Participate in handovers.
Infection prevention, health and safety
Follow infection prevention procedures.
Follow lone working and fire procedures.
Use equipment safely.
Report hazards immediately.

Person Specification
Knowledge and qualifications
Certificate of Care or willingness to work towards it.
Experience
Experience in domiciliary, live-in, learning disability, mental health, spinal injury or end of life care desirable.
Communication
Clear spoken and written English.
