Background Introduction
We are looking for a passionate and professional certified Social Worker to become a part of our Family Help localised team. You will work closely with children, their families, colleagues across the Directorate and partner agencies to deliver a range of support and intervention services to promote the welfare, safety and good outcomes of children with a Family Help plan.
You will have a major influence on children’s safety and work in conjunction with the Multi-Agency Child Protection Team (MACPT) if concerns are raised and be part of prompt and successful protective responses. The post demands a strong commitment to high quality practice within the statutory framework – Children Act 1989, Children Act 2004 and Working Together 2026 upholding the objectives of the Families First Program.
If you can demonstrate through application form, interview and references that you meet the relevant competencies for Senior Practitioner then you will be hired at the right level dependant on skills and experience in accordance with our Social Work Progression Pathway. This method also offers good support and growth for Social Workers in Herefordshire, with a defined career pathway from entry to social worker to Senior Practitioner.

As a Social Worker in the Family Help team you will have a key role in supporting children, young people and their families to achieve positive and sustainable outcomes. As the Family aid Lead Practitioner you will be working as part of a locality based team, leading and managing a complicated caseload to give effective aid, protection and intervention.
You will assess needs, identify risks and design individualised Family Help Plans, working together with partner agencies to ensure coordinated and multi-agency support. The function entails chairing and attending key meetings such as Child in Need, core group and strategy meetings. It includes carrying out risk assessments and safeguarding work when issues emerge.
You will form robust, supportive connections with families and professionals to bring about real change and protect the safety and welfare of children, especially those who are cared after. Key features of the function include accurate documentation, report writing (including court work) and contributing to decision making.
About You
You must be a qualified Social Worker (Social Work Degree, DipSW, CQSW or similar) with current Social Work England registration and a commitment to continuing professional development.
You will have experience of working with children and families in a statutory social care context, a good awareness of safeguarding, child protection and relevant legislation and advice. You are confident in your ability to assess risk and analyse complicated familial relationships and provide effective treatments that enable children to remain safely within their families whenever feasible.
You are a great communicator who can develop trusted relationships with children, families and multi-agency professionals. Your capacity to listen, watch and connect with empathy enables you to work restoratively and make a real difference.
You are organised and resilient and able to cope with a tough workload, keep correct records and deliver clear and high quality reports. You are comfortable with IT systems and are devoted to the highest standards of practice.
Most importantly you have a strong commitment to improve outcomes for children and families and to working collaboratively with others with principles of trust, honesty, responsibility, inclusion and empathy.

Salary £37,563 – £42,123 per annum (£42,123 – £46,579 for Senior Practitioner posts)
Market rate supplement: £5,000 per annum.
Welcome Payment: £10,000 (see attached guidance document)
