UK’s new immigration law: Those who violate visas will not be allowed to hire foreign workers

UK’s new immigration law: A growing number of British industries, including IT, healthcare, and hospitality, are depending more and more on foreign workforce. But this pattern might alter in light of the new regulation.

UK's new immigration law

As per the new immigration proposal unveiled by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on Tuesday, companies that breach work visa regulations would no longer be permitted to recruit foreign workers.

During his address to the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, the Prime Minister outlined the government’s plan to limit immigration and lessen the reliance of the United Kingdom on foreign labour. Connecting immigration regulations to market demands and skills gaps, he emphasised the value of educating young Britons instead than depending on immigrant labour.

“Look, I’ve always acknowledged that there are valid worries over immigration. Actually, this government’s aim is to lessen net migration as well as our reliance on it for economic growth. “As there are millions of young people who are ambitious and highly talented and who are desperate to work and make a contribution to their community, I have never thought we should be relaxed about certain sectors importing labour,” the speaker stated.

“Trust me there are plenty of examples of apprenticeship starts going down at the very same time that visa applications for the same skills are going up and so we will get tough on this,” Starmer said.

New regulations for companies

A growing number of British industries, including IT, healthcare, and hospitality, are depending more and more on foreign workforce. But under the new regulations, companies who are found to be breaking visa laws will not be allowed to hire foreign workers. Sir Keir stressed that in order to guarantee regulatory compliance, the government would keep closely examining present visa sponsors.

The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) conducts a yearly evaluation as part of the Prime Minister’s strategy. This independent committee will identify industries that primarily rely on hiring from abroad and have labour market failures. The impact of visa regulations imposed by the previous Conservative government, such as limitations on dependents and higher wage requirements for work permits, has already been assigned to the MAC for evaluation.

Labour’s more comprehensive outlook

In his speech, Sir Keir emphasised that national rejuvenation requires teamwork and talked about building “a Britain built to last, built with respect and built with pride.” Though he acknowledged that making difficult choices now will pay off later, he expressed optimism that there was “light at the end of this tunnel.”

A £22 billion “black hole” in public finances that the Labour government claims it inherited from the Conservatives has also been brought to light. Along with a dispute over donations to senior Labour figures, controversial choices have received criticism, such as the reduction of winter fuel subsidies for millions of pensioners.

The number of applications has sharply decreased after the UK government implemented strict restrictions to limit immigration, as reported by UK Home Office:

  • Main Applicants: Skilled Worker: 14.3% drop
  • Skilled Labourer (Relatives): 33.0% Reduction
  • Primary Applicants: Health and Care Workers: 79.7% drop
  • Care Providers (Dependants): A 46.9% decrease
  • Main Applicants: Health and Care Workers: 85.3% declined
  • Health and Care Provider (Dependants): A decrease of 66.3%
  • Main Applicants for Sponsored Study: 41.1% decline
  • Sponsored Study: Dependants: A decrease of 89.3%
