UK immigration updates 2024: The new prime minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer of the Labour Party, may tighten immigration laws, increasing border checks and increasing eligibility requirements for foreign nationals wishing to immigrate. During a recent TV debate, Starmer declared that Sunak was “the most liberal prime minister we’ve ever had on immigration,” and he pledged to keep the UK in the European Convention on Human Rights.
Labour has promised to cut net migration, with the goal of bringing the yearly total down to “a couple of hundred thousand.” They think it seems sense to not establish a precise goal, but they expect their policies to result in this reduction. Without further steps to reduce these figures, the Office for Budget Responsibility projects that under present Conservative policy, net migration will stabilise at about 350,000 per year over the next five years.
By 2028–2029, the fiscal impact of 350,000 annual net migration is expected to improve public finances by reducing public sector borrowing by £7.4 billion. International students make up a sizable share of net migration; their tuition payments support the expansion of course offerings and offset deficits in local financing for research and students. They also give UK companies access to temporary labour.
Visas for Work and Skilled Workers
Labour intends to tighten the relationship between immigration and skills policy by enforcing suitable visa limitations without overtly restricting immigrant pathways. They intend to change the apprenticeship levy to skill local workers in order to alleviate shortages in industries including engineering, IT, and construction. Sponsors in important professions are required to follow fair pay agreements and workforce plans set by the government. The Labour administration intends to:
- Prohibit employers from sponsoring employees if they don’t have enough workforce training.
- Should industries neglect to participate in workforce strategies, remove jobs from the Immigration Salary List.
- Employers who break the minimum wage and other employment standards may face harsher fines.
- Bolster the Migration Advisory Committee and connect it to national skills organisations in the UK.
- Labour also intends to look into the effects of the Conservatives’ raises in the Skilled Worker route income thresholds and their ban on care workers bringing dependents.
Visas for Health and Care
Labour will create an agency to protect workers’ rights and look into allegations of exploitation of migrant labourers in the social care industry. The prohibition on family accompaniment for carers and senior carers is not going to be lifted.
Youth Mobility, Creative Workers, and Seasonal Workers
To reduce post-Brexit administrative obligations, Labour may negotiate new arrangements with the EU for touring performers. Though extending the Youth Mobility Route would help with the labour shortages in childcare, retail, and hospitality, they do not intend to negotiate a youth mobility programme with the EU.
Labour may enact laws to address exploitation of seasonal workers. The current government oversees the welfare of seasonal workers and guarantees them a minimum of 32 hours each week. Recommendations to safeguard these employees should be taken into account, though.
Routes for Family and Settled Status
Labour is in favour of raising the Partner route’s minimal income criterion, but they also stress the need to reassess family routes in order to maximise their social and economic benefits. To guarantee adherence to Brexit agreements and enhance status verification processes, the incoming government must tackle ongoing concerns regarding the management of the EU Settlement Scheme.
Immigration Charges
Labour has not declared any adjustments to immigration charges. It may be necessary to evaluate recent large increases in fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge prior to making any more adjustments.
