In Scotland, allied health professionals (AHPs) play a crucial role in patient care. You will have extensive expertise in your position and work to improve your patients’ health in a comprehensive way.

AHPs perform a range of tasks that assist in patient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and discharge in a number of health and social care contexts.

Qualifications

In the United Kingdom, all allied health professions are governed by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Must first submit an application and pass the required tests in order to register with the HCPC through the overseas method. You will be questioned regarding your training, credentials, work history, and clinical experience.

You may get a lot of assistance with your application on the HCPC website.

The HCPC has registration assessors who review each application on an individual basis. Both character and health references are required, and you must fulfil the HCPC’s requirements. Along with filling out course information forms, you also need to submit a history of your work experience. You can occasionally be asked to submit clinical references.

The HCPC provides a useful information on eligibility and registration for international applicants to aid you with your application.

Please be aware that being registered with the HCPC does not grant you employment rights in the UK.

1. Fill out the application for HCPC eligibility and qualification.

You must register for an online account with the HCPC and finish your eligibility and qualification application after passing your English language test.

It will be necessary for you to prove that you are proficient in the AHP profession. Every application is evaluated individually. It takes 15 working days to complete the initial evaluation. After that, applications move on to the qualification evaluation procedure. It can take up to three months as of January 2023.

2. Interview

You will probably have a virtual interview if you apply directly to an NHSScotland Board. Your employing Board will send you a conditional offer letter if you pass your interview with the Board’s recruitment panel or through an international recruitment agency. The following phases in the hiring process will be described in this letter.

3. Prior to travel

This is the first thing you must do if you still need to take the required English language exam. It is necessary to obtain your UK work permit (visa) and HCPC registration.

This is not usually required when applying for a position. The Board advertisement you apply to or the agency you join will determine this. However, before you receive an unconditional offer letter and are allowed to travel to the UK, you must pass the English language test.

You must achieve the following score on the TOEFL or IELTS:

  • Academic level 7.0 on the English Language Test System (IELTS), with no component below 6.5, or a certification similar to this
  • A score of 8.0 on the English Language Test System (IELTS), with no component below 7.5, or a similar qualification is required for speech and language therapists.
  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-based Test (IBT), which can be taken in the candidate’s own country, is also accepted by the HCPC. A minimum score of 100/120 is required of all professionals, with the exception of speech and language therapists, who need to score at least 118/120.
  • All exams must be taken no more than two years prior to the application date.

4. Certificate of sponsorship

You will be given your registration number after registering with the HCPC.

After that, your employing Health Board will submit an application to the UK Visa and Immigration Authority (UKVI) for your certificate of sponsorship. You will also be given a reference number.

5. Obtaining a visa and visiting Scotland

You need to apply for your Health and Care Worker visa as soon as you have your certificate of sponsorship reference number. Usually, your employing board will cover the cost.

To learn more about the visa application procedure, go to the UK Government website.https://www.gov.uk/health-care-worker-visa

A copy must be emailed to your employing board as soon as your visa application is accepted. After that, travel can be planned.

6. Upon arriving in Scotland

As soon as you arrive in the UK, you must pick up your biometric residence permit, which confirms your right to work there. You will get this within 10 days of your arrival.

Following that, you must present the NHSScotland Board’s recruitment department with your original identification documents and biometric residency authorisation. You will also be given help in establishing a UK bank account and setting up your pay.

Once you arrive in Scotland, you will work as a band 4 pre-registered AHP professional.

Your Board will support and promote your training and development once you arrive.
