Immigration Enforcement Raids all over UK
Immigration Enforcement Raids: A week-long crackdown on unlawful work results in 75 detentions. In the last week, more than 120 companies that have employed workers without authorisation were hit with civil penalties.
During a week-long crackdown, 75 suspected illegal workers have been apprehended by Immigration Enforcement agents.
According to the Home Office, officers have been to over 225 establishments in the last week, mostly car washes. Of them, 122 have been fined civil penalties for hiring undocumented labour.
“It is completely wrong that dodgy employers can work hand in glove with the smuggling gangs who risk people’s lives to bring them here illegally and push them into off-the-books employment,” said Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.
The gangs sell these workers outright lies, forcing them to live and work in horrible conditions for meagre pay. That is precisely why we have initiated crackdowns like these: we are committed to stopping this.
“Although this operation represents a significant advancement, our dedication to resolving this matter is not over. We’ll make sure the full weight of the law is applied to those who disobey the rules.
According to officials, employers of illegal workers frequently undercut their rivals and failed to pay their due share of taxes, kept their workers in “squalid” conditions, paid less than the minimum wage, and had them work long hours.
Companies who are discovered to be hiring individuals without the proper authorisation risk fines of up to £60,000 for repeat offenders and up to £45,000 for first-time offenders per worker.
Shortly after taking government in July, Ms. Cooper revealed that Immigration Enforcement will “intensify” operations during the summer as part of Labour’s promises to strengthen border security.
On Wednesday, she unveiled a new “intelligence-driven” plan to combat companies who hire people unlawfully and stated her intention to utilise the next six months to achieve the greatest rate of removals of those who have no legal right to be in the UK since 2018.
Director of immigration enforcement, compliance, and crime Eddy Montgomery stated: “The operation this week demonstrates the Home Office’s commitment to safeguarding the weak and holding employers responsible.”
“Our commitment is to halting the exploitation of vulnerable individuals by criminal gangs, guaranteeing that they receive the necessary assistance, and enforcing severe penalties for lawbreakers.”
“I’m so proud of our teams nationwide for their dedication and cooperation in planning and carrying out this nationwide operation.”
