Live and Work in the UK, Without a Job Offer | Global Talent visa
The UK’s new initiative to draw extraordinary talent to the nation is called the Global Talent visa. It has taken the place of the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa as of February 20, 2020.
If you are a “leader or potential leader” in digital technology, arts and culture, or academics and research, you can work in the UK for up to five years without a job offer or sponsor if you have a Global Talent Visa for the UK.
Notifying immigration officials of a job change does not affect your ability to renew the visa several times.
Global Talent Visa Overview
You can apply for a Global Talent visa to work in the UK if you’re a leader or potential leader in one of the following fields:

How much time can you spend here
You may spend a maximum of five years living and working in the UK.
If you’d like to extend your stay in the UK
The total amount of time you can spend in the UK is unlimited, but when your visa expires, you will need to renew it, or “extend” it. You determine the duration of each extension, which can range from one to five years.

Depending on the field you work in and how you apply, you might be eligible for indefinite leave to remain, which would allow you to live in the UK after three or five years. This grants you the freedom to come and go as you want, live, work, and study here, and to apply for benefits if you qualify.
How to apply For this Visa
You must apply online.
How you apply depends on whether you’re:
- Outside the UK and are coming to the UK
- Inside the UK and extending your current visa
- Inside the UK and switching from a different visa
How much time it need
You will be required to certify your identity and submit supporting documentation with your application.
If you need an appointment to do this, you might need to budget extra time. When you begin your application, you’ll discover whether you require one.
Following your online application, identification verification, and submission of supporting documentation, you should receive a decision regarding your visa within:
- If you’re not in the UK, allow three weeks.
- For those in the UK, it’s eight weeks.
Paying could enable you to receive a decision more quickly.
Charges
Applying is £716 in cost.
Should your application be based on an endorsement, the £716 will be paid in two installments:
- £524 at the time of the endorsement application
- £192 at the time of the visa application
When you apply for the visa, you will need to pay the entire £716 if your application is based on an eligible award.
Your partner or children must each pay £716 if you include them in your application.
Healthcare surcharge
You’ll also have to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application – this is usually £1,035 per year for each person applying.

The documents you’ll need to apply
When submitting an application, please supply:
- A current passport or equivalent identity and nationality document
- Your tuberculosis test results, should you reside in a nation where testing is required
If you have received a scholarship or award to study in the UK during the last year, you will additionally require written consent from the government or organisation that bestowed it.
It will also be necessary for you to submit a certified translation if your documents are not in Welsh or English.
For your visa, you must have a blank page in your passport if you are:
- From outside Switzerland, the EEA, or the EU
- Originating from Switzerland, the EU, or the EEA, but lack a biometric passport with a chip in it
In the event that you are the recipient of a qualifying award, the Home Office will verify your victory by reviewing publicly accessible data (such the website of the award organisation). If they are unable to locate this, you will just be asked for proof of your victory.
Bring Your dependents
If they qualify, your partner and kids may also seek to come live with you or remain in the UK as “dependents.”
Your partner’s or child’s visa will typically expire on the same date if their application is approved. The child’s visa will expire on the earlier date if both of their parents hold visas with separate expiration dates.
Any of the following describes a dependent partner or child:
- your spouse, child, civil partner, or single partner
- your child, under the age of 18, including any children born in the UK while you were visiting
- your dependent child over the age of 18, if they are now in the UK
When you apply, you will have to show proof of your relationship to your dependent.
Change to this visa
If you are in the UK already with another kind of visa, you may be able to apply to switch (or “switch”) to a Global Talent visa.
If you want to switch your partner’s or kids’ visa, you will need to apply separately. They may apply at any point before their existing visa expires, or concurrently with you.
Eligibility to switch visa
You must be in the UK and hold one of the following in order to convert to a Global Talent visa:
- Received a qualifying honour
- Demonstrated your leadership ability or promise in one of the areas the visa is intended for; this process is also known as receiving an endorsement.
In addition, if you are in the UK on a student visa, you need to have either:
- Finished the course for which you were funded to attend
- Pursued a PhD for a minimum of 24 months.
