Role Overview
The Software Engineer will work within a growing team of business and technical specialists and contribute to key aspects of the development cycle of Synaptec’s sensing technologies from simulation through to field deployment.
The position focuses on software design and development to enable Synaptec’s instrumentation technologies for the power industry.
More specifically, the role will directly contribute to the development of new analysis and visualisation tools for the power grid and renewables industries.
Experience and confidence in software development will play a big role.
The Engineer will be actively involved in Synaptec’s key product development and testing processes and will be given the latitude to create and undertake experimental or development activities.
This person will ultimately be responsible for ownership of key product areas.
The Engineer should be versatile and capable of contributing to and completing a wide range of operations.
Synaptec is a young, growing company and as such, these activities may include helping to write proposals, attending meetings with industrial clients and prospects, or representing the company at project meetings.
The Engineer will be expected to obtain invaluable interdisciplinary experience and to take opportunities to build new abilities and contribute at an increasing level to Synaptec’s success.
The post will report directly to the company’s Lead Software Engineer on a day-to-day basis.
The post holder will be expected to provide updates to the wider team on technical progress and to assist in the preparation of reports or presentations to external clients.
The role is full time and will be based within the company’s Glasgow premises.
Occasional visits to sites and short time working at clients or suppliers sites may be required.
Key Objectives
Contribute to the day to day software development activities of the organization to the finest standards feasible.
Build, install and maintain new data analysis functionality in the company’s software products.
Help design and improve the software tools used to configure and manage the company’s hardware products, including customer and internal feedback.
Support the company’s project delivery.
Ensure software quality standards and best practices are introduced and followed in all software delivery activities.
Key Criteria
The candidate must be able to show:
Strong programming abilities and expertise. E.g. Python, Go, C/C++, Java or similar.
Experience with database software such as PostgreSQL and sophisticated systems such as TimescaleDB, other timeseries databases, NoSQL databases, or GIS databases.
Docker experience.
Experience with cloud platforms like AWS.
Experience with security and handling certifications.
Self-motivation and capacity to work independently, efficiently and diligently.
Good academic qualification in engineering, computer science, physics or a related discipline.
Confidence in team working in a high technology environment.
Excellent communication skills and attitude, ability to communicate technical information to colleagues and customers in a clear and easy manner.
Ability to create clear, accurate, high quality documents and presentations with strong attention to detail.
Selection Criteria
Experience with data analysis techniques including machine learning and application to sensor/monitoring data.
Experience with web based technologies and web design.
Experience with server hardware management.
Experience with embedded or real time software for integrated hardware systems.
Experience in power system engineering and/or analysis, particularly in the energy generating, Transmission or Distribution sectors.
Experience utilising agentic AI development tools (e.g., AI coding assistants, agents) to speed up software design, development, and testing.
