Eligibility Criteria
To be a jail officer you will need to:
be 18 years old before you begin work
meet the nationality requirements for the Civil Service (see the section on nationality below)
because it’s a physically active work you will be need to pass a medical and fitness assessment as part of the application process
meet the required vision standard for both eyes (with or without corrective lenses)
All those training as a jail officer must have hearing to an acceptable standard (without the use of hearing aids) for safety reasons.
Tattoos are allowed, even visible tattoos, as long as they are not perceived as disrespectful, discriminatory, aggressive or menacing in any way. Facial tattoos are normally prohibited, unless they are for cultural, religious or medical reasons.
As this is a prison with a security status, you will need to get a Counter-Terrorism Check (CTC vetting). Commute to Work
Some jail settings are in rural areas with poor public transport links, so a driving licence and own transport is an advantage but not a required prerequisite for the work (unless stated). Please note that shift start and finish times are defined and it is your obligation to arrive at and leave from your place of work for the start of your shift in a timely manner. Weekly training is 37 hours/week. After the training you can opt to work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week. Your income for each year depends on the number of hours you work every week.
37 hours a week = £37,246 per year
39 hours a week = £97,375 per year
41 hours a week = £41,503 a year
All compensation statistics listed include any additional allowances relevant for the role/location.
Prisons are open all the time. This means you’ll need to work a variety of shift patterns including evenings, some nights, weekends and public holidays (these days are added to your holiday allowance). Most jails work on a shifting shift plan, 39 hours a week.
You may also have the chance to work extra paid hours.

Tests on the Net
Once you have finished your initial application form you will be prompted to complete stage 1 of the online test, to check if you have the fundamental judgement and numerical skills necessary of a jail officer.
If you are successful you will be invited to attend the stage 2 online test (task based assessment) to check if you have the natural habits and attributes to become an effective prison officer.
The Online Assessment Center (OAC)
If you pass the online tests, we will invite you to an online assessment centre where we will examine if you have the talents, behaviours and strengths to become a jail officer.
