Highly trained nurses from India to help ease staff shortages in care homes
A thousand highly trained nurses from India will help in easing the UK’s growing care home staff shortage crisis.
A thousand highly trained nurses are set to fly in from India to help tackle chronic staff shortages in care homes across the UK.
They will work as healthcare assistants and senior carers – roles not typically filled by qualified nurses. It is hoped they will raise the standard of care for frail aged people, particularly in dealing with emergencies.
The scheme is part of a £ 15 million two-year investment in the care sector.
Nurses from India are going through the final stages of vetting. They are expected to start arriving before Christmas. The intake was rubber-stamped last month during a meeting between PM Rishi Sunak and Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India.
Further deals are expected to follow.
Speaking after the pair were photographed in a warm embrace at the recent G20 summit, Mr Sunak said trade discussions had been “very warm and productive”. UK firm Stylus Consulting brokered the recruitment deal with India’s National Skill Development Corporation at a jobs fair earlier this year.
Niko Phillips, director at Stylus, said: “These workers are overqualified for these positions. These are excellent qualified nurses who will take direct care roles. The benefits of that to our nation’s most frail, who often face emergency situations, is clear.”
After a rigorous screening process selected candidates must undergo a period of “cross-cultural training” in India before arrival.
Mr Phillips said: “The Government has addressed the issue of understaffing in the adult care sector. The UK has an ageing
population while India’s is young – we can provide a solution to both countries.”
The Department of Health and Social Care said: “International recruitment has a valuable role to play in helping grow the adult social care workforce. It has the potential to fill thousands of vacancies, allowing the health and care sectors to benefit from the skill, compassion, and commitment of overseas workers who wish to work in England.”
