The contract covers approximately 22 waste streams, including materials generated through teaching, administrative, commercial, and residential activities. You will make sure that data is accurately recorded, performance is regularly monitored, and opportunities for improvement are found and addressed.

It is vital to have a solid analytical approach. In order to generate accurate performance reports, evaluate environmental consequences, including emissions, and find potential for innovation, waste reduction, and improved circularity, you will leverage contractor data portals and internal reporting systems. To track and enhance environmental results, you will collaborate closely with the sustainability team, colleagues in legal compliance, and other specialised services.
As a member of the Waste Management Steering Group and reporting to the Head of Cleaning Services, you will be in charge of waste operations at every university location. You will work closely with Residential Services, who oversee their own waste streams. In addition to actively interacting with the Sustainability Service, academic departments, Estates teams, and other internal stakeholders, you will work with the Health and Safety Service on regulated waste streams (such as radiation and chemical waste).
In your role as a leader, you will inspire, oversee, and train employees to guarantee a productive and efficient service that is in line with university values. By including strict health and safety regulations and guaranteeing a secure campus for all users, you will foster a healthy work atmosphere.
Operationally, you will be in charge of the state, security, and effectiveness of the University estate’s waste disposal facilities. This entails carrying out routine audits of contractor performance, physical condition, and compliance standards as well as supporting innovative and waste-reduction initiatives that further our shift from conventional waste management to a circular strategy.
On behalf of stakeholders within the university, including residential services, commercial services, and academic and research areas both on and off campus, you will also make sure that all waste-related service contracts adhere to established Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
Ensuring compliance across all waste streams—including hazardous, chemical, clinical, and radioactive waste—as well as upholding strict standards and collaborating closely with subject-matter experts to guarantee safe and legally compliant operations will be a crucial aspect of your job.
Along with strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to collaborate, influence results, and establish productive working relationships throughout a large and complex organization, you will bring substantial experience managing employees and supervising contractor performance within a waste management function.
