New plans to reduce net migration: The additional measures that were announced yesterday will help the government achieve its goal of reducing net migration.

Yesterday’s announcement of additional steps to reduce net migration at historically high levels supports the Home Secretary’s strategy of addressing the underlying issues that have led to the UK’s prolonged reliance on foreign hiring.

The industries that depend most on foreign labour will be singled out to make sure they are addressing their underfunding of local skill development.

The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) will be tasked by the government to monitor and proactively highlight critical areas where shortages of skilled labour have resulted in spikes in foreign recruiting. The MAC will also be responsible for providing an annual assessment to ministers to assist in making policy decisions.

Additionally, regulations pertaining to the sponsorship of migrant workers' visas will be tightened so that firms who violate labour laws would face severe consequences and be prevented from hiring foreign labour. This is on top of the measures already taken to crack down on holders of sponsor licenses and to end visa abuse, including increasing the number of UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) investigation visits and suspending and revoking licenses in cases where employers take advantage of migrant workers and abuse the immigration system.

https://destinydot.com/news/hmrc-compliance-caseworker/

This comes after the Home Secretary previously announced plans to connect immigration policy with skills and broader labour market policy, meaning that employers will no longer automatically turn to foreign hiring to fill skill shortages, and the government has confirmed that the immigration system modifications made by the previous administration will stay in place.

The Home Secretary unveiled a new, coordinated approach to government in July. It lays out a framework within which the Industrial Strategy Council, Skills England, and the Department for Work and Pensions will collaborate closely with the MAC to ensure that training and skill shortages in the UK are not substituted for migration.

https://destinydot.com/news/work-visa-for-foreigners-in-austria-2024/

By investing in workforce plans, training, and better jobs for domestic workers, sectors will be able to lessen their reliance on foreign labour and quickly address skills shortfalls. This is made possible by the MAC's annual assessment.

The enlarged function for the MAC will be strengthened by extra capacity and includes work to analyse the core issues of why certain sectors are so reliant on international workers. The Home Secretary has already given it a mandate to investigate the IT and engineering industries, two important fields that have historically depended on foreign labour rather than locating the staff and expertise locally in the UK.

To Bring Dependent to the UK, labour orders a review of the proposed minimum wage of £38,700. The Migration Advisory Committee was directed by Yvette Cooper to examine the appropriate minimum income threshold for family visas.

A study of Tory plans to require British workers to earn £38,700 or more in order to bring their spouses to the UK has been ordered by Labour.

The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has been given nine months by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to submit a report outlining the appropriate minimum income threshold for family visas.

As per Rishi Sunak’s announcement from the previous year, the barrier was increased from £18,600 to £29,000.

Aiming to reduce net migration by 300,000 per year, the previous administration planned for it to climb to £34,500 and then £38,700 by early 2025.
However, Ms. Cooper stated in a letter to Professor Brian Bell, the head of the MAC, on Tuesday, “This Government is committed to bringing down net migration and creating a fair and coherent system, including on family migration policy.”

“It is requested that you examine the financial prerequisites, specifically pertaining to the Minimum Income Requirement’s level, the previous government’s suggestions to raise it, and any other pertinent considerations you may find.”
Ms. Cooper emphasised that Labour is dedicated to reducing net migration, which increased under the Conservatives to a record high of 764,000. She also stated that she would review the recommendations and determine whether or not to implement them after receiving Professor Bell’s report.

In the past, Tory officials postponed raising the salary threshold to £38,700, which is higher than the median gross annual pay of £34,963, because they were concerned that the move would cause division among UK families.

The study conducted by Ms Cooper may lead to the complete abandonment of proposals to raise the minimum salary level to £38,700. It was anticipated that the action would result in tens of thousands less net migrants.
Sir Keir Starmer failed to set a deadline for his objective despite vowing to reduce immigration levels he called “sky-high” prior to the election.

Employers “should always have a choice of recruiting a British worker first,” according to Sir Keir, who said that companies had grown “too reliant” on foreign labour.

Reunite Families, a campaign group, applauded the reconsideration of the salary requirements for family visas.

The policy has ruined the personal lives of countless loving couples and families who were denied the chance to be together in the UK simply because they didn’t earn the right amount or couldn’t meet the increasingly difficult hurdles put in front of them in order to do so, according to co-founder and executive director Caroline Coombs. The policy has been hidden in plain sight for far too long.

“The increase already introduced is a prime example of policies designed to garner attention and motivated by the need to be seen acting swiftly on net migration,” Ms. Coombs continued.
