The Home Secretary has declared that immigration officials will be stepping up enforcement operations throughout the summer, with a focus on nail bars and car washes.
According to Yvette Cooper, 1,000 federal workers who were employed on the now-canceled Rwanda project have been reassigned to run a brand-new “returns and enforcement program.”
The new program would intensify raids on companies suspected of hiring undocumented workers with the goal of “increasing returns of those with no right to be here and to make sure rules are respected and enforced.”
In a Sunday article in The Sun, Ms. Cooper continued, “We have instructed Immigration Enforcement to step up their operations over the summer, with a focus on employers who are enabling and exploiting illegal working here in the UK – including in car washes and the beauty sector – in order to fuel the crime gang trade.
Additionally, new procedures are being developed to expedite returns and decisions for safe countries.
As stated in its campaign, Labour has made border security a high priority in government and has already taken action to establish the Border Security Command.
During the European Political Community summit this week, Sir Keir Starmer also spoke with other European leaders about migration and hinted that he would be open to the idea of looking into offshore processing agreements like the one between Italy and Albania.
However, he has come under fire from Conservatives for abandoning the Rwanda plan on his first day in office, with opponents claiming it served as an essential deterrent for those attempting to cross.
Ms. Cooper stated in her essay that working on small boats would take time and that “hard graft not sticking plasters” would be needed.
“With record numbers of crossings already this year, we’ve inherited a difficult summer, and we know tackling the problem will take steady hard graft not gimmicks,” the speaker stated.
Thus far this year, at least 15,489 migrants have crossed the Channel in small boats; more arrivals on Saturday are expected to take that figure far over 15,500.
Over the last two weeks, a spike in crossings has been observed due to the recent fine weather; the number of individuals making the journey in 2024 is still expected to be significantly higher than in 2023 and roughly equal to that of the previous record year, 2022.
With two deaths reported last week and four the week before, the crossing has also proven to be lethal.
According to Ms. Cooper, the majority of people in this nation desire an asylum system that is well-managed and supervised, in which the UK assists individuals escaping persecution and conflict while expeditiously expelling those who have no right to be there.
“Under the Conservatives, we have had nothing but expensive chaos for far too long—that has to change now.”
