UK Student visa and PSW Updates: After Rishi Sunak’s crackdown on foreign student visas, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson promises that “international students are welcome in the UK.”
“International students are welcome in the UK,” announced newly appointed Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, who also announced that the government would “take a different approach” to the Conservatives.
The secretary of state made an effort to allay campus worries that the previous administration’s intentions to crack down on foreign student visas would negatively impact institution finances, as international students frequently pay hefty tuition.
In an attempt to lower record legal net migration numbers, Rishi Sunak earlier announced additional limitations on the majority of students bringing dependents. Ms. Phillipson offered no indication that these restrictions would be changed.

She did, however, indicate a shift in tone.
“For too long, international students have been treated as political footballs, not valued guests—their fees welcomed, but their presence resented,” she said yesterday at the Embassy Education Conference in London.
“This government will communicate clearly and adopt a different strategy.”
“There is no doubt that the UK welcomes international students.”
In addition, she stated that the government was “committed to managing migration carefully.” However, she also stated that her passion was for an open and global Britain that welcomes new ideas and looks forward in hope rather than inside in isolation.
In the past, Mr. Sunak has considered restricting graduate visas so that only the “best and the brightest” could visit the UK.
After finishing a course in Britain successfully, a student is granted permission to remain in the country for a minimum of two years, known as a graduate visa.
However, it was reported that Mr. Sunak was thinking of shortening the duration of these visas or limiting their application options to prestigious universities.
He was informed that if he moved forward with his proposals for additional limitations, universities would lose staff members and maybe close.
Some Members of Parliament view graduate visas as a backdoor to permanent immigration to the United Kingdom.
To reduce migration, the government tightened limits on student visa routes in January.
Family members of international students are no longer permitted to go to Britain with them unless they are enrolled in postgraduate research programs or courses that are supported by government grants.
