ESSENTIAL NOTES

  • To combat possible misuse of this approach, the UK intends to implement more stringent regulations for student visas.
  • The costs associated with maintenance will increase, among other things.
  • Authorities have issued a warning about stricter submission requirements for educational institutions in addition to student visas.

The Home Secretary and Education Secretary have recommended additional measures that include raising the financial maintenance requirements. However, they did not specify the exact amount of the increase.

In order to enrol in courses in London, international students must currently have £1,334 ($1,700) per month for a maximum of nine months, and £1,023 ($1,300) per month for courses outside of London.

The government is also examining English language examinations, as stated in more detail in an official release, to ensure that all international students comprehend the course materials.

Stricter Requirements for Institutional Compliance

The UK also intends to impose more stringent submission requirements on educational institutions that accept international applicants as part of the planned changes. Authorities have also mentioned that there will be more oversight over the recruitment agents.

“Those who accept international students who then fail to pass our visa checks, enrol or complete their courses will risk losing their sponsor licence.” – UK Home Office

In Q1 of 2024, the UK received 30,000 fewer applications for student visas.

The UK has tightened immigration laws, notably those pertaining to student visas, in recent months.

A new policy prohibiting overseas students from bringing their family members to the UK was put into effect by the government in January 2024. According to official statistics, this move has been reflected in the number of applications for student visas.

More precisely, compared to the same period in 2023, the UK received 30,000 fewer applications of this type between January and April of 2024. In addition, there were 79 percent fewer applications that were dependent on students.

Despite a decline in overall migration numbers, Home Secretary James Cleverly believes that more steps are needed to address the possibility of student visa misuse.

“We must go further to make sure our immigration routes aren’t abused. That’s why we are cracking down on rogue international agents and building on work across government, to ensure international students are coming here to study, not work.”- James Cleverly, UK Home Secretary”

The Home Secretary’s plan to reduce legal migration includes the aforementioned actions. In 2024, the UK had a 25% decrease in the total quantity of visa applications due to new regulations.
