A lot is going on in the UK government as the end of 2023 is fast approaching from the restrictions on dependent visas to wondering whether to stop the care visa, and that has not been concluded. The MAC now comes in to recommend the UK to cancel the shortage occupations list completely. The MAC recommends that the shortage occupations list be abolished and replaced with a new system for attracting skilled workers to the UK.
No More UK Shortage Occupations List?
Hence, in today’s Post, we will give you the latest updates on this review published by Mac and UK Immigration in general. On October 9th, 2023, the UK Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) published its report on the UK’s shortage occupation list SOL. The SOL is a list of skilled jobs for which there is a shortage of local workers. The MAC recommends that the SOL be abolished and replaced with a new system for attracting skilled workers to the UK. Mac’s recommendation is based on three main factors, including the following one short of abolition.
1. The Mac recommends the elimination of the discounted 80% salary threshold for employers seeking to hire foreign workers for occupations.
2. If the government seeks to continue the Sol, the Mac recommended a pared-back list of just eight occupations, including laboratory and pharmaceutical technicians, construction and building trades workers, bricklayers and masons, roofers and tilers, animal care service occupations, home carers and senior carers.
3. The MAC suggested that if the Government does decide to abolish the Sol, the MAC could be commissioned to examine individual occupations or sectors where labor market issues are particularly acute, possibly in collaboration with other bodies.
Hence this means that if the government gets rid of the Sol, it will be easier for businesses to hire foreign workers for any job, not just Sol jobs. This could lead to more foreign workers being hired in the UK if the government keeps the Sol. It will be harder for businesses to hire foreign workers for non sol jobs. This could make it harder for businesses to find the workers they need. If the government gets rid of the Sol, the Migration Advisory Committee could be asked to look at specific occupations or sectors where there are big problems with finding workers.
This could lead to the government taking steps to address these problems, such as providing more training for British workers or making it easier for employers to hire foreign workers for these occupations or sectors. Additionally, the MAC also argues that the SOL is not an accurate measure of labour market shortages. The MAC found that the SOL includes a number of occupations for which there is not actually a shortage of workers. The SOL is too restrictive and prevents businesses from hiring the workers they need. The Mac found that the SOL excludes a number of occupations that are in high demand from businesses.
The SOL is unfair to British workers. The MAC found that the SOL makes it easier for businesses to hire foreign workers than to train British workers. The Mac’s recommendation is likely to be controversial. Some businesses have warned that abolishing the SOL will lead to a shortage of skilled workers in the UK.
