UK Begins Withdrawal Of Job Offers Of Legal Migrants: Is Everyone Facing Deportation?UK Immigration Updates

UK Immigration Updates: According to reports, the UK has started the withdrawal of job offers to migrant workers and students amid the deportation plan set to take effect around July 2024. Companies like Deloitte and HSBC have commenced this action and are currently doing withdrawals of their offer letters from migrant workers and students. We all know if your offer letter is withdrawn and you aren’t able to get another company in three weeks, you will be considered as an illegal migrant and will face deportation. So could this be a strategy the government is using to have more candidates for deportation in July?

UK Immigration Updates

As big corporations are compelled to reevaluate contracts following the government’s introduction of harsher immigration requirements, HSBC and Deloitte have become the most recent companies to withdraw job offers to foreign graduates in the UK.

According to persons familiar with the situation, the two companies informed scores of newly hired employees that their job offers had been withdrawn in recent weeks, as reported by the Financial Times. The people said that HSBC and Deloitte placed the responsibility on the UK government for raising the wage requirement for skilled worker visas.

Last month, KPMG, a significant employer, terminated the contracts of a number of international graduates.

As part of its efforts to reduce record levels of legal migration, the government raised the wage requirement for skilled worker visas from £26,200 to £38,700, and to £30,960 for individuals under the age of 26 as of April.

Graduates in “digital innovation” who were expected to work in HSBC’s Sheffield office in the north of England are impacted by the company’s decision. Those impacted were scheduled to start in July, had “work buddies” allocated by the bank, and had just attended a number of welcome events.

“I declined three other offers,” remarked one of the impacted parties. “I have to return home after spending £50,000 on my university education in the UK.”

According to documents obtained by the FT, the bank hired consulting firm EY to examine specific cases and provide advice on modifications to the regulations governing visa eligibility.

In the UK, Deloitte hired almost 2,700 people through its graduate, apprenticeship, and internship programmes, compared to HSBC’s 720 hires of recent graduates.

According to someone briefed on Deloitte’s decision, some 35 graduates, or roughly 3% of the firm’s autumn intake, had their offers revoked due to changes in their visa status.

They went on, “Some of our roles no longer meet the requirements for sponsorship of skilled worker visas due to the new eligibility criteria.”

This week, the UK’s Migration Advisory Committee issued a warning to the government not to eliminate the graduate visa programme, a different initiative that permits international students to work in the country for two years after graduating. Prior to the upcoming general election, which is scheduled for before the end of January, polls indicates that one of the top three topics on voters’ minds is immigration. In the polls, Labour is leading the ruling Conservatives by a wide margin.

Following the announcement of the new skilled worker visa restrictions in January, businesses are scrambling to deal with the repercussions.

HSBC informed certain grads that they would receive an email explaining the decision, but all they have gotten from the company so far is an automated message stating that they “decided to leave the selection process” and that HSBC is “sorry to see [them] go.”

The statement from HSBC stated that “we are unable to forward a small number of offers to candidates as part of our graduate scheme this year due to changes in the rules covering those seeking sponsored visas to work in the UK.” Even if this is sad for HSBC as well as the candidates, we must abide by the rules in every market we serve. We are now having conversations with those that are affected.

EY and Deloitte declined to comment.

Right now we can’t really tell what is going to happen in the future, but it seems more and more will be deported before elections, so everyone should stay focused on the news to know recent changes in everything so that they won’t be left behind.
