We are looking for driven individuals to join the Whiston Hospital Maternity Department’s vibrant nursing and medical staff.

The ideal candidate will be able to work autonomously, completing responsibilities while still being supervised by midwives. Prior experience working in a maternity department is required for this position.

The position holder will help with phlebotomy, breastfeeding support and guidance, maintenance of necessary equipment, and five-star patient care and support for expectant and postpartum women and their infants.

Under the guidance of midwives, maternity support worker work exposes you to a variety of skills and provides ample opportunity for professional growth. The Trust offers a wide choice of internal training programs, ongoing professional development assistance, and possible access to additional opportunities.

For this position, an enhanced DBS with barred lists for both adults and children is necessary.

Principal responsibilities of the position

  • To assist and encourage midwives in giving women, their partners, and infants the best possible care prior to, during, and following delivery.
  • Should cooperate with coworkers in the ward/community team and help with the care of women and their infants as instructed.
  • Attend to a group of expectant mothers or moms and infants, recording their care and informing the midwife of any observations.
  • In accordance with the Unicef Standards, consistently offer information and support based on evidence about infant feeding. possess a solid understanding of the local options available, such as breastfeeding support groups and drop-in clinics.
  • Educate parents one-on-one or in small groups, giving them the most recent guidance on safety concerns such lowering cot mortality, room temperature, placement, and bed sharing.
  • Inform the midwife or another healthcare provider—such as a general practitioner or health visitor—about any concerns of abuse or domestic violence.
  • To always act professionally and with confidentiality
  • To assume responsibility for work that is outside the purview of the position and to acknowledge one’s limitations in terms of competence.

You will spend most of your time working one-on-one or in groups with service users as a valued member of the multidisciplinary team. Along with attending training, working on projects, and collaborating with colleagues from different specialities, you will also have the chance to develop the peer support service.

One of the User Engagement Leads will oversee and report to you. The Trust’s Lived Experience Managers will provide you with further oversight and assistance.
