Long-awaited New Law for UK Workers is unveiled

To support businesses, workers, and communities around the UK in achieving economic security and prosperity, ministers unveiled the Employment Rights Bill.

  • With the passage of the Employment Rights Bill, abusive zero-hour contracts and dishonest firing and rehire procedures will be eliminated, and immediate parental leave and bereavement rights will be established.

The Employment Rights Bill was tabled within 100 days of the new government taking office, and ministers launched it today, October 10, to support economic growth and security for workers, businesses, and communities throughout the United Kingdom.

Economic growth depends on getting the labour market back in motion; in the UK, one in five enterprises with more than ten employees report staff shortages. In order to meet this challenge, flexibility is essential for both firms and employees. This is why updating the law to make it more appropriate for the current economy and way of life is at its core.

As promised in the manifesto, the two-year qualifying period for protections against unjust dismissal will be eliminated, guaranteeing that all employees would be entitled to these benefits from the moment they start working.

Additionally, the government will consult on a new statutory probationary term for newly hired employees of businesses. This will make it possible to properly evaluate whether an employee is a good fit for a position and reassure staff members of their rights from the start, allowing companies to take a chance on new hires and empowering more people to change careers or re-enter the workforce and raise their standard of living.

The measure will implement 28 distinct workplace reforms, ranging from giving millions of workers day-one rights for paternity, parental, and bereavement leave to outlawing abusive zero-hour contracts and fire and rehire practices. Additionally, statutory sick pay will be reinforced by eliminating the lower earnings cap for all employees and the waiting time before sick pay begins.

Alongside this, there will be steps taken to assist make the workplace more livable for employees, with flexible scheduling becoming the norm when it makes sense. In addition, action plans on menopausal assistance and gender pay inequalities must be developed by large businesses. Additionally, pregnant women and new moms will have stronger protections against termination. All of this is done to help the economy expand, retain workers in their jobs for longer, and save employers money on hiring new employees by improving employee retention.

In order to uphold legal rights including holiday pay and assist companies seeking legal advice, a new Fair Work Agency will be formed, uniting the current enforcement entities.
