Home Secretary James Cleverly says that the Home Office started more raids on illegal labour are focused on the restaurant and building trades.
Home Secretary James Cleverly stated on Tuesday that more immigration raids are focusing on the restaurant and construction industries in an attempt to locate undocumented labourers.
It coincides with the announcement made by the Home Office on Tuesday that it has cleared a goal of processing over 112,000 asylum cases by the end of 2023. Last year, 67% of applications that were subject to an initial decision were approved.
According to Mr. Cleverly, in the past year, there has also been a rise in both forced and voluntary returns of individuals seeking asylum.
He acknowledged, though, that the Government does not maintain thorough records of people who actually depart the country.
According to Mr. Cleverly, “We don’t necessarily track people as they leave the country,” Times Radio heard.
However, we are aware of a 66% rise in voluntary returns, which is essentially our way of telling people, “Look, you’re not going to get asylum; you should go home.”
“There’s also been a 67% increase in enforced returns, where we basically sent people back home.”
He went on, “If they attempt to enter the legal economy, for instance, we greatly increase the raids on illegal labour, so in the end we find these people.”
“We go looking at places where we know people work illegally; frequently, this is in the restaurant or building industries. We know where these people usually go and work, usually with cash in hand and without documentation. We go find them and remove them.
“This is proving effective. We’re heading out to find them. They will undoubtedly attempt to hide, but we will search for them, locate them, and deport them.” The government ought to give precedence to repatriating asylum seekers back to their home countries in addition to granting asylum, according to opposition members of parliament.
“We are aware that the backlog of cases is still eight times larger than it was during Labour’s previous administration.
“It involves more than just processing the application; it also involves sending back asylum applicants to the UK if their request is denied. We are aware that there are about 56,000 asylum seekers in the UK who must return home and are currently waiting to be sent back.
“So the Government’s being slow, not just on processing the applications, but also on returning people home when they’ve not been granted asylum to stay in the UK.”
When asked if Labour planned to handle applications overseas, Mr. Jones replied that the party “would consider all options that are available to us” and that similar systems had been successful in Hong Kong and the Ukraine.
It occurs at a time when the government is making an effort to crack down on asylum seekers and lessen the number of individuals crossing the Channel in tiny boats to reach Britain.
Mr Cleverly announced that as of Monday, there will be no more “unreasonable practice” of foreign students bringing their families to the UK due to new restrictions on visa routes.
According to him, the ban will reduce migration by tens of thousands and affect everyone with the exception of those enrolled in postgraduate research courses and those receiving government-funded scholarships.
Suella Braverman, his deposed predecessor, had announced the measures in May, just before official statistics put net migration at 672,000.
Experts have cautioned that the move could negatively impact UK universities that depend on foreign student fees and damage the country’s standing as a travel destination.
