Ministers are fearful about today’s migration figures, and foreign health workers may only be permitted to bring one relative with them.
Foreign health workers : According to new proposals to reduce immigration, foreign health and care workers may only be allowed to bring one relative to the UK.
The proposals have been made public in advance of tomorrow’s expected record-breaking release of net migration statistics for the year ending in June.
In 2022, net migration—which counts the number of individuals who enter the UK less the number who departs—reached a record 606,000.
The number that was revealed on Thursday might reach 700,000.
Ministers’ response to tomorrow’s figures is expected to include a crackdown on the number of dependents of foreign health and care workers, according to The Times.
According to the newspaper, the UK issued 282,742 health and care visas in the year ending in June, which represents a 171 per cent increase over the same period the previous year.
Furthermore, 151,774—more than half of those—were given to the dependents of healthcare and social workers.
Data indicates that compared to other nationalities, Indians and Nigerians bring a disproportionately large number of family members with them.
Between June and June of last year, 25,027 Nigerians and 35,091 Indian health and care workers brought 40,726 and 47,432 dependents respectively.
According to reports, Robert Jenrick, the immigration minister, and Suella Braverman, the home secretary who was fired earlier this month, had been advocating for a limit on care visas and a prohibition on dependents.
Following resistance from the Department of Health and Social Care, Downing Street is rumored to have capitulated by proposing to limit the number of dependents to one per visa.
The Tory Right is expected to exert more pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak following the release of tomorrow’s net migration statistics.
The group of MPs known as the New Conservatives has called for steps to be taken in order to reduce net migration to 226,000 by the time of the anticipated general election in 2019.
While Mr. Sunak has acknowledged that the number of migrants is “too high” since becoming prime minister, the Conservative manifesto for the 2019 general election promised to reduce the “overall numbers” of migrants.
Mr. Sunak is ‘actively’ considering ways to reduce legal immigration to the UK, No. 10 has confirmed.
The official spokesperson for the prime minister stated: “We are actively investigating additional ways to decrease legal migration.”
“Obviously, small boat crossings continue to be our top priority.”
“And it goes without saying that we must accomplish that while striking a balance between the importance of expanding the economy and realizing things like the economic benefits that students can bring, for example.”
The Government announced that most international students would not be allowed to bring family members to Britain with them when the most recent set of net migration statistics were released in May.
According to The Times, Mr. Sunak is currently considering other measures, such as doing away with the shortage occupation list, which loosens visa requirements for companies operating in labor-scarce industries.
However, because Cabinet ministers cannot agree, this is not expected to be announced until later in the year, according to the newspaper.
According to Madeleine Sumption, director of the University of Oxford’s Migration Observatory, “people are currently being brought into really low-paid jobs through the shortage occupation list.”
“It wouldn’t be the case any more and there might be a stronger case for it if the salary threshold was much higher.”
Labour’s health spokesman, Wes Streeting, has previously criticized the NHS for its “overreliance” on foreign hiring and pledged that his party would place a greater emphasis on “homegrown talent.”
