Cyrenians

We encourage people in reaching their goals and meet them where they are.

A group of students who were upset and disillusioned with the treatment of those who were homeless founded our organisation in 1968. The newly created Cyrenians movement, which grew out of the Simon Communities concept, is reflected in the residential community model they developed, where volunteers live among people who were once homeless on the streets.

Current Vacancies

Residential Community Volunteer

Location: Our Farm Community House (rural area close to Wilkieston) or our City community (north Edinburgh). If necessary, you may switch between the two.

A studio bedroom will be your residence at the Farm community. You and another volunteer will share a room in the City Community. The young residents you are helping will live with you.

Bills (including internet) and rent will not be paid by you. In addition, we will pay for your weekly subsistence stipend and food expenses.

Time: residing in the community full-time for at least six to nine months. Every week, you have two days free to explore, relax, and enjoy yourself.

Additionally, there will be holidays, and with a modest holiday allowance. You can take a break and travel to Scotland, the UK, and other countries.

Visa requirements: We will assist you in obtaining a Temporary Worker (Charity) visa if you are applying from outside the UK and are not a British citizen or a resident of the UK.

What are our City and Farm communities?

Our residential communities are designed to give young people a place where they can grow in self-assurance, independence, and skill. We want to provide them the tools they need to gradually transition independently to a more sustainable way of life. Living with volunteers enables residents to see other approaches to dealing with life’s challenges.

To do this, we collaborate with the local council and social work agencies. Up to 15 people, all between the ages of 18 and 30, live in the two communities after experiencing homelessness. For six to nine months of the year, up to six volunteers reside with the residents. Our staff, who evaluate the residents, offer them advice, enforce the agreements and regulations, and have general accountability for all community members, is always there to support them.

What will you do as a volunteer?

Living with young people who have been homeless will be your experience. Since this is your home together, you will aid them and take care of your common areas. Some people may find it difficult to participate or exhibit difficult behaviours. Additionally, residents may struggle with learning, mental health conditions, disabilities, or trauma.

They may struggle to obey the rules or behave differently towards you or other residents as a result. In order to help people progress towards a more positive future, your primary role will be to provide a positive living environment and experiences.

Together with other volunteers, you will form a team that helps manage the community. Your assignments will be diverse and may consist of:

  • Maintaining communication with the residents and serving as a peer mentor
  • Assist the inhabitants in gaining the abilities and self-assurance they need to advance in life and get greater independence.
  • Guiding or assisting residents with meal preparation and shopping.
  • Providing Cyrenians staff with information on the inhabitants, such as issues, comments from events, or exchanges with them.
  • Assist in making the area enjoyable, safe, and engaging for everyone.
  • Coordinating time off and deciding who will volunteer when with your fellow volunteer or volunteers.

We will give you the assistance and instruction you need to interact safely with the tasks and young people. Team meetings, monitoring, and support are held on a monthly basis. To help you and the residents, our staff is available.
