Universities are telling students they may get in trouble for using artificial intelligence (AI) to finish essays.
Steve West, the Vice Chancellor at the University of the West of England (UWE), advised to not take the risk.
A previous University of Bristol student played around with the ChatGPT bot to get a lower-grade mark on one of his previous essay questions.
“I received a score of 65%, and it took me two weeks to complete. ” Pieter Snepvangers said that ChatGPT was only 12 marks away, which is frightening.
ChatGPT is a computer program that talks to people like a real person. It can give answers to questions using facts from the internet, and it sounds pretty convincing.
One of Mr. Snepvangers’ old teachers graded his essay and gave it a score of 53%. The teacher knew that the essay was made by a computer program, not Mr. Snepvangers
The student asked the bot 10 questions and got a long essay with 3,500 words. After that, the student took 10 minutes to make it look good for the experiment.
‘Convincing’ English
“Mr. Snepvangers said that ChatGPT didn’t include in-text referencing. However, he mentioned that if I had included that, my work would have received a good score, either a high 2:2 or a 2:1. ”
“He said that the English were persuasive, but it frequently avoided giving a direct response to the real question. ”
Can you think about how the software will be for students who are beginning college right now and are in their third year.
“Mr Snepvangers said that universities need to find a way to change and adjust their assessments. ”
His teacher also mentioned that out of 33 essays submitted for one class this year, four of them seemed suspicious when looked at from the perspective of artificial intelligence.
A person from the University of Bristol said that using ChatGPT without permission is considered cheating, just like other chatbots or artificial intelligence software.
Many people really like ChatGPT since it started in December.
It learns from lots of information so that it can guess how words should be put in a sentence.
Using regular anti-plagiarism software can be difficult to catch because it creates a completely new answer for given questions.
Students do not require artificial intelligence.
Steve West, the leader of the University of the West of England, mentioned to students that using AI to make essays is against the rules. He also mentioned that he tried using the software himself.
I am someone who specializes in foot surgery, so I asked a difficult question about a surgery and got a response.
“Would I rely on that answer to perform the surgery. Definitely not”
We cannot undo technology, but we need to know its limitations.
However, the professors and teachers are smart, and they will notice if someone uses it. “Students, you are smarter than that. You don’t have to do it,” he said.
