Qualifications
- In order to work as a prison guard, you must:
- Be at least eighteen years old before you start working.
Fulfil the requirements for civil service nationality (see the section below on nationality requirements). - You must pass a medical and fitness evaluation as part of the application process because this is a physically demanding job.
fulfil the necessary standards for both eyesight (with and without corrective glasses). - Everyone undergoing jail officer training must have a satisfactory level of hearing (without the use of hearing aids) for safety concerns.
- Although visible and other types of tattoos are acceptable, they must not be interpreted as insulting, discriminatory, violent, or menacing in any manner. Generally speaking, facial tattoos are not acceptable unless they are necessary for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
Requirements for nationality
The following groups are generally eligible for this position:
- UK citizens
- Republic of Ireland nationals
- Commonwealth nationals who are eligible to work in the United Kingdom
- EU, Swiss, Norwegian, Icelandic, and Liechtenstein nationals, as well as their relatives, who have permanent or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) https://www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families
- EU, Swiss, Norwegian, Icelandic, or Liechtenstein nationals, as well as their relatives, who have properly applied for settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS)
- People who were eligible to apply for EUSS on or before December 31, 2020, and had either limited or indefinite leave to remain
