We are hiring prison guards to cover openings at HMP Leeds in the future, in addition to officers who are currently needed. We are recruiting under this special futures scheme, which promises you a prison officer post at HMP Leeds permanently, but during the first 23 months of service, you will work at HMP Whitemoor. This is because we need officers to fill vacancies at other prisons.

It’s a fantastic chance. Working with us

Hywel Dda University Health Board develops and delivers the NHS healthcare services for the people who live in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and border counties.

We employ over 13,000 workers and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disability services.

We work in conjunction with the three local administrations and with public, commercial and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

Our services include:

Qualifications

To become a jail officer you will need to:

be at least 18 years of age at the time you commence work

satisfy the Civil Service Nationality standards (see below under ‘Nationality’)

This is a physically active work and you will be need to pass a medical and fitness assessment as part of the application process

meet the required vision standard in each eye (with and without corrective lenses)

For safety reasons everyone training to be a prison officer needs to have a suitable standard of hearing (without the use of hearing aids).

Tattooing is authorised, including on visible areas of the body, provided that they are not offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating in nature. Tattoos on the face are generally not allowed unless for cultural, religious or medical reasons.

To work in a high security jail (Category A) you must have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years

Commuting to Work

Some jail sites are in rural settings with limited public transit facilities therefore a driving licence and own transport is advantageous but not a mandatory prerequisite of the employment (unless mentioned). Please remember that shift start and finish times are predetermined and it is your duty to arrive to and from your place of work on time for the start of your shift. Please think carefully about the location of this vacancy and your transport choices before applying.

You will be paid according to the prison you work and the hours you work per week.

37 hours a week = £33,746 a year

39 hours a week = £35,875 per year

41 hours per week = £38,003 per year

All listed salaries include any additional allowances relevant to the role and region.

Prisons are a 24/7 business. This will mean you will have to work varied shift patterns which will include evenings, some nights, weekends and public holidays.

You could also get possibilities to work extra paid hours.

We are also transitioning to the Mosaic case management system, which will give our social workers a more efficient platform that lowers bureaucracy and boosts time working directly with children and families. We’re also looking into how AI tools can help us get better at what we do.

Available Teams

Contact and Assessment Team

A city-wide service which carries out initial evaluations when a request for a social work service is received. The team is primarily concerned with short term assessment and intervention on a voluntary rather than a statutory basis. Protection Resource

A city-wide program that conducts first child protection evaluations for children and young people. The team is committed to the assessment and intervention of imminent risk. Children’s Practice Teams

Social workers in practice teams work together with families and other professionals to undertake assessments, manage risk and deliver targeted interventions for children and young people who live at home and those who are looked after and accommodated, often working with the Child Protection Register and the Children’s Hearing system.
