Description of the Role

Their International Volunteering Program (IVP) gives candidates the chance to develop transferable skills like organisation, communication, and teamwork—all of which are critical in any professional workplace—while also giving them firsthand experience in the day-to-day operations of an international non-governmental organisation.

As volunteer Processing Support Officers at our Processing Centre in Canterbury, interns enrolled in their IVP program do a range of duties in the following teams: The team responsible for processing, sorting, and packing donated materials; the sales team for the charity shop, which values and lists donated books, DVDs, and other items for sale; the tech refurbishing team, which refurbishes, values, and lists donated electrical equipment; and the fundraising and marketing team, which carries out grant applications and content creation. Additionally, candidates have the chance to finish a variety of role-related trainings and seminars.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the IVP program, applicants must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Age: To apply, candidates must be at least eighteen years old. The application will require your date of birth.
  • Language: Candidates must speak, read, and write English with ease. During the application process, a personal statement in English will be needed. Those that make it through the application process will also be asked to participate in a video interview.
  • Volunteering Experience: Candidates must have prior volunteer work experience. During the application process, a resume and a recommendation letter from their volunteer employer or a Books2Africa Ambassador (a past IVP or sponsor) will be needed.
  • Immigration History: Applicants are required to disclose their dependents, travel history, and whether they have previously had their visa to the UK denied.

The Cost of Living

The IVP program is a voluntary, unpaid position. Candidates must demonstrate that they have one of the following living expense plans in place:

  • Living with a host: When applying, candidates who plan to live with a host (a friend, family, etc.) must include the following information:
    The host’s complete address and phone number in the Canterbury/Kent region.
    The host’s letter of support confirming that they are willing to host the candidate for the duration of the program.
    A utility bill with the host’s name and address or a council tax notice serve as proof of address.
  • Living in rented housing: When submitting an application, candidates who plan to rent housing must include the following information:
    A bank statement in your name that demonstrates the £3,500 in available money for your six-month utility and housing payments serves as proof of finances.

The Procedure for Applications

Every year, from November 1 to November 30, the IVP program’s online application form becomes available. After being interviewed in December, qualified candidates receive a COS in January, allowing them to apply for a visa and start the 12-month program in March.

Notice of Application: Applications for the 2025 batch are now being accepted. On December 1st, we will assess applications and get in touch with candidates to let them know if they have been selected for an interview or if their application was not accepted. A COS will be granted to qualified applicants in January 2025, with a start date of April 2025, following a successful interview. Warmest regards.
