Job description

Your job as a Compliance Caseworker is vital to HMRC; you are in charge of making sure tax laws are followed and looking for possible non-compliance. A sharp eye for detail, great analytical abilities, familiarity with pertinent tax law, and the capacity to effectively communicate complicated information are all prerequisites for this role. Working directly with taxpayers, you will conduct fair and impartial case investigations, evidence collection, and resolution facilitation.

Once you’ve completed your training you will be assigned to one of our tax specialisms and, although there are distinctions, the main tasks of each function include:

  • Applying your knowledge of tax laws to financial transactions by going over financial records, tax returns, and other pertinent papers to look for any irregularities or areas of concern.
  • Carrying out exhaustive investigations into alleged instances of non-compliance, obtaining proof and doing data analysis to ascertain the best line of action.
  • Communicating facts, elucidating problems, and assisting in resolutions with taxpayers, their representatives, and other interested parties.
  • Resolving conflicts amicably, legally, and in accordance with the Compliance Professional Standards and Customer Charter of HMRC
  • Writing in-depth reports that include conclusions, suggestions, and supporting data.
  • Keeping case files current and accurate while making sure you follow HMRC guidelines.
  • Working together with coworkers and cross-functional teams to guarantee that best practices and tax laws are applied consistently.
  • Taking part in continuing education and professional development programs to stay up to date on modifications to tax legislation and compliance guidelines.

This is a multifaceted profession that combines desk-based research with on-site visits to taxpayers’ properties. This could apply to any location where a business is located, including offices, warehouses, bars, banks, and authorised gaming establishments. In some circumstances, you might have to spend the night away.

Working conditions

We use a hybrid working model at HMRC. This implies you can spend up to 40% of your time working from home. For the remainder of your stay, you must report to an HMRC office. Instead of precise hours and minutes, working time is calculated in days at HMRC.

Our Compliance Caseworkers are available from Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and during these hours, you may work up to 37 hours per week.

Training

To become a certified compliance caseworker, successful candidates must finish the HMRC Civil Compliance Foundation Learning (CCFL). This rigorous yet rewarding training program will provide you the information, expertise, and experience you need to be a successful compliance caseworker. The cohort group that the trainees are assigned to will begin on the same day. The entire training program lasts for eighteen months.

  • The first three months (12 weeks) are spent in the Central Training Unit (CTU) as a cohort group to finish your indoctrination and provide you an overview of the compliance caseworker position. For the first 12 weeks of the program, you will need to work full-time, spanning a hybrid workweek where you must spend at least 60% of your time in the office, as you will be functioning as a training group.
  • You will spend an additional six months in the CTU after the induction phase to finish stage 2 of your training, which entails creating, honing, and applying the fundamental skills needed to be a compliance caseworker.
  • You will be assigned to a business area after completing stages 1 and 2 of your training satisfactorily. The next nine months of your training will be spent working on a particular tax regime, which will further enhance your technical abilities and knowledge.
