This includes volunteering and job shadowing.

UK Temporary Worker routes

Employers can sponsor workers on seven different Temporary Worker routes:

Temporary Worker Routes 1

Charity Worker: This is for someone who wishes to travel to the UK for a maximum of 12 months in order to volunteer with a nonprofit group.

CreativeWorker: This is for someone who wishes to work in the UK for up to 12 months as a creative worker (such as an entertainer, dancer, singer, or artist) or as a model in the fashion business. If they work for the same sponsor, the time limit may be extended to a maximum of 24 months.

Global Business Mobility routes

  • Graduate Trainee: this has replaced the Intra-Company Graduate Trainee route and refers to personnel who are being transferred to the UK by their overseas employer as part of a graduate training program for a managerial or specialist post with their overseas company.
  • UK Expansion Worker: this has superseded the (unsponsored) solo representative provisions of the Representative of an Overseas Business route and is intended for foreign employees who want to open a branch or subsidiary of their foreign employer in the UK.
  • Contractual Service Provider: This refers to foreign employees who work as independent professionals or contractual service suppliers for a UK company under an approved trade agreement; it has superseded the provisions for independent professionals and contractual service providers on the International Agreement route.
  • Secondment Worker: this is a new pathway for foreign employees who are being sent to the UK as part of a high-value contract or investment by their company abroad.

Government Authorised Exchange: This is for someone who wishes to enter the UK for a maximum of 12 or 24 months (depending on the program) under an authorised program.

International Agreement: Workers sponsored on this route can stay in the UK for a maximum of two years. This is for someone who wants to travel to the UK to perform a service covered by international law, such as private servants in diplomatic households or employees of foreign governments and international organisations.

Religious Worker: This is for someone who wishes to support religious organisations in the UK by performing religious work for a maximum of two years, such as serving in a religious order or performing non-pastoral work for a religious organisation; the work cannot include serving as a minister of religion.
