No More Work & Dependent Visas? UKVI Updates
Work & Dependent Visas :The UK government is planning to use new methods to restrict most migrant workers and students in the UK.What’s happening in the UK and what discussions and proposals are ongoing.Go through all the latest updates by the UK government. But before that, I want to give you some background related to today’s topic and why those discussions are happening.
So the recent report published by UK government on net migration for 2022 will surprise you as the number is alarming. It says net migration to the UK hits all time high in 2022. You can read the summary from the screen. Let me just highlight a few points which are important to my readers. Students accounted for the largest group of non EU migrants in 2022, but there has been an increase in workers arriving with visas to fill chronic staff shortages in NHS and social care. As per the ONS data, the majority of the 1.2 million arrivals were from countries outside the European, which was 968,000. The revised figures for 2022 shows net migration to the UK was 745,000. The new figures for 12 months to June 2023 show net migration at 670 2000, which indicates downward trend, meaning slowing of immigration. After the UK left the European Union, people from other countries started coming to the UK more often. In fact, in 2022, more people came to the UK then left. But that number has started to go down now. The ONS doesn’t know yet if this is a trend or if the number will go up again. Some people in the UK worry that if more people come to live here, it will make it harder for British people to find jobs and get paid as much. What is UK government doing about this data?
There are various discussions and proposals being made and remember this of proposals and not a law now. So let’s discuss the proposal.
1. Raising the minimum salary threshold for work visas.
So just a reminder to my new readers UK is following points based system where one of the criteria is that you should get minimum salary for that particular job as defined by the UK government. So now the Home Office has decided to increase the salary thresholds for skilled worker visas from 26,500 to 30,000 and above to cut net migration. This will make it more difficult for employers to find and recruit workers from overseas. However, we don’t have a date yet When The plan will be implemented.
2. Limiting number of dependents for health and social care workers.
The government is considering restricting the number of dependents that health and care workers can bring with them. This would reduce the number of immigrants entering the country through this visa route. And proposal number three is abolishing the shortage occupation list. So let’s first understand what a shortage occupation list. It’s a list of jobs that local employers are having trouble filling because they aren’t enough qualified people available to do that job. These jobs are then added to the SOL, so that licensed employers can hire skilled workers from other countries with a smaller salary. Currently, there are several jobs which are in a shortage occupation list like doctors, nurses, carers, engineers, I.T. scientists, construction workers, social care and many more.
3. Abolishing of UK’s Shortage occupation list.
Migration Advisory Committee, an independent group that advises the government on immigration issues, has made some surprising recommendation like,Complete abolition of the shortage occupation list, due to exploitation of carers in care home, which is rising day by day. They think if they abolish the shortage occupation list, employers cannot hire any more cheap labor and hence they will be forced to pay same salary as they do to the local British people.
