Purpose of role

The Nursery Manager is the operational and professional core of Dickory Docks. You will be responsible for all aspects of the day to day running of the nursery including quality of care and education provided to children, development and wellness of your team, Ofsted and EYFS compliance and the relationship the nursery has with families. You will be the Registered Manager (Ofsted registered) with professional responsibility for the setting. The owner runs at board level only, you run the nursery and you will be granted the liberty that comes with that. This is the most essential hire in the nursery’s new chapter. We are seeking for a great leader, not just a good manager.

Principal accountabilities

Inspire and motivate the whole nursery team to create a culture of high standards, real warmth and continual progress. As the Registered Manager for Ofsted, I ensure we are always fully compliant with the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and all Ofsted regulations. To provide lead and child safety across the nursery, either as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or with direct management of the DSL. Manage complaints against personnel including communication with the Local Authority Designated Officer and record and act on low level concerns. Follow the current EYFS safeguarding criteria in full including safer eating and choking prevention, safer sleep, intimate care and the use of mobile phones, cameras and smart devices in the setting. Maintain a Single Central Record that is compliant and up to date with DBS status, qualifications, references, right to work and disqualification statements. Notify Ofsted of all statutory notifications, in the relevant deadlines including significant occurrences and changes to registered people. Ensure quality of educational provision across all rooms including curriculum, planning, observation, assessment and progress tracking for every child including statutory progress check at age two. Lead inspection preparation according to Ofsted’s current methodology, which generates a report card grading seven evaluation categories on a five-point scale, with safeguarding recorded separately as met or not met. Build everyday evidence, not inspection week evidence, and ensure that every practitioner can speak comfortably to an inspector about their own practice. Lead on inclusion as a stand alone area of accountability, ensuring that children with SEND, children with EAL and disadvantaged children are properly included and making progress. Have a competent SENCO in situ (either take on the role yourself or recruit and oversee it) and lead the graded approach and any EHC needs assessment requests. Maintain a candid, live self-evaluation and a costed, time-limited improvement plan, discussed at each board meeting. Build and maintain positive, trusting relationships with parents and carers through professional handling of concerns and continuously outstanding communication. Own the complaints procedure, resolving problems early and maintaining the required record of complaints and outcomes. Full staffing management including rotas, cover, performance management, appraisals and recruitment, working in cooperation with the owner and external HR support and following safer recruitment practice at every level. • Keep a record of regular one to one supervision sessions for all staff as required by the EYFS. Deploy staff efficiently to ensure required ratios and qualification requirements are maintained at all times even during absence, holidays and peak periods. Retention of workers. Turnover is a reported KPI and a leading indicator for quality. Keep all required documentation: Ofsted registration, risk assessment, staff records, children’s files, EYFS assessments, safeguarding records and self-evaluation proof. Health and safety management throughout the facilities including risk assessments, fire safety and evacuation, food safety and allergen management, medication and accident reporting. Use children’s, families’ and staff records in a GDPR compliant way. Maintain the policy and procedure library with review dates recorded. Work closely with the Business & Operations Coordinator to ensure effective administration, correct invoicing, funded entitlement claims to Reading Boro Council and timely financial reporting to the board. Drive and maintain occupancy against set target, personally performing show-rounds and ensuring all inquiry follow-up is timely. Manage the nursery budget and the staff cost ratio but be aware that personnel is heavily non-discretionary and that occupancy is the single biggest lever on viability. To ensure that the nursery management software is used appropriately and consistently for registers, observations, invoicing and parent communication. Prepare and present the monthly management report to the board including occupancy, quality, staffing, compliance and financial performance at the board meetings. Support the nursery’s growth strategy through marketing, local employer and community connections and working with the owner on occupancy and capacity targets. Promoting and upholding the nursery’s ideals of ethical practice, inclusion, sustainability and the wellness of each child, family and team member.

Required Qualifications

Full and applicable Level 3 qualification in Early Years (or equivalent) This is the legal prerequisite for the qualification of the management of the setting. Minimum of three years’ experience in an early years setting with a minimum of two years at management or deputy management level. Knowledge of the EYFS framework, safeguarding regulations and Ofsted’s current inspection framework and early years toolbox. Level 3 Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) training or a willingness to undertake training immediately upon employment. DSL training must be renewed every 2 years. Current Paediatric First Aid certificate or willingness to train immediately Enhanced DBS clearance including barred list check. Not subject to a barred list check in respect of early years provision. Must be subscribed to the DBS Update Service (or receive subscription on appointment). Proven impact in leading, developing and motivating a team with proof of enhancing results for children and staff. Excellent written and oral communication abilities. You are the parents’, Ofsted and partner organizations’ point of contact for the childcare. A genuine commitment to outstanding early years education and a consistent child orientated approach. Good knowledge of safe recruitment methods.
