We are ideally positioned to safeguard, promote and lead the sector through digital and data transformation, making a difference to students, communities and society. We are together.

aiming to establish a better digital future for education & research.

Cultivate your potential through our culture of lifelong learning. At Jisc we live and breathe growth, so take on new challenges, hone your talents and build a career that fascinates you.

The position:

As a Software Developer at Jisc you will accelerate your career via our dynamic skills structure which provides a clear and inspiring route to level up quickly. You’ll grow to clear, measurable standards linked to your technical skills, opening your next step as soon as you’re ready. It’s about powering your continual development, developing your skillset and pushing your potential beyond what you ever thought possible.

Developers in this profession are expected to work independently and own fairly complicated projects. They should be skilled in debugging, testing and optimising code and contribute to architectural decisions. They frequently have the ability to mentor others, cross teams well and take the initiative to improve procedures and code quality. They demonstrate an increasing appreciation for the entire development lifecycle and the ability to balance technical and business objectives.

You will be responsible for:

  • Design, construct and operate safe and scalable applications utilising contemporary engineering principles and cloud-native approaches.
  • Work with users and product owners to refine technical requirements and turn them into well-structured development assignments and architectural decisions.
  • Lead testing efforts, drive debugging and performance optimisation throughout the stack, deploy automated test methodologies.
  • Clearly communicate engineering decisions and tradeoffs to stakeholders as we demo new features and technological improvements.
  • Participate in application and cloud architecture design including pipelines, deployments and infrastructure patterns.
  • Monitor the performance of Jisc’s apps in live contexts and validate that development work is meeting the needs of the sector.
  • Create an inclusive, feedback positive environment to support team effectiveness and coach others. Enable collaborative issue solving.

What we want:

  • Demonstrated experience in delivering production ready software, taking ownership of tasks and contributing across the stack as required.
  • Good knowledge of modern software development languages and practises and a willingness to learn is more crucial than specific technologies, ideally knowledge of Python and/or Typescript, SQL, Terraform, CDK, GitHub and AWS.
  • Ability to plan, design, develop, test, optimise and document software with minimum guidance, aiming for simplicity and maintainability.
  • Familiar with debugging, performance tuning, source control workflows and architectural and design decisions.
  • Proactive and enquiring, with a dedication to continual learning, enhancing team procedures and encouraging inclusive collaboration.
  • Clear and unambiguous communication that encourages constructive criticism, cooperative issue solving and balanced decision making.

Not meeting all the requirements?

We understand that individuals may be discouraged from applying for a position if they believe they do not satisfy every criterion, so we invite you to apply even if you do not meet 100% of the qualifications, but feel this role is ideal for you. You could be the perfect fit for this or other positions!
