About Newton Dee

Aberdeen, Scotland’s Newton Dee is a Camphill community. We provide persons with learning impairments and other special needs with a home, fulfilling employment, and chances for personal growth. The Newton Dee community is home to about 200 people that work and live there overall. Approximately 50% have special needs. Coworkers and their families make up the majority of the others.

A significant aspect of life is engaging in meaningful work that produces high-quality products and services that benefit others. Everyone works in our many businesses, with the exception of those who are unable to engage because of their age or health. Working is about becoming something rather than merely doing something. We provide jobs in metalworking, joinery, farming, gardening, textiles, baking, cooking, housework, landscaping, and our store and cafe.

Voluntary Short-term Coworkers

All year long, we take applications for temporary volunteer co-working jobs. Our temporary employees are from all around the world. We are able to sponsor a Tier 5 volunteer VISA for individuals who are not from the UK.

Before applying, please review the frequently asked questions about short-term coworkers. An application form can be downloaded by clicking the link below:

Coworkers who are prepared to stay for at least six months are welcome to apply, but those who can stay for a full year (12 months) will be given preference.

The email address for applications is recruitment@newtondee.org.uk.

Applications should only be sent by email; DO NOT POST THEM.

FAQs for Short-Term Coworkers

  1. What kind of experience is required?

Not at all. It is not necessary for temporary employees to have prior experience dealing with adults who have special needs. Simply bring an open mind, a willingness to participate, and the ability to take charge at work and at home. To fully enjoy the seasons and festivities, we would want you to stay with us for at least a year.

We occasionally offer possibilities for people to work with us for a shorter time if you have prior Camphill experience, particularly during the summer.

It is preferable for those who want to commit to our community for the long run to have prior experience with us or other Camphill communities.

2. How about Brexit?

Our appreciation for our European volunteers remains unchanged. In fact, Brexit has made us value our ties to Europe even more than before.

Founded by Austrian refugees in 1939, Camphill is now a very global and European movement. There is a diverse range of national and cultural backgrounds, as well as a large number of languages spoken in any Camphill neighbourhood. We consider this to be one of the Camphill movement’s greatest assets, and we are working hard to protect it both during and after the Brexit process.

Volunteers from the EU must now apply for a VISA.

3. What if a VISA is required?

For those who are not from the UK, Newton Dee can sponsor Charity VISAs. You can only volunteer in Newton Dee if you have a Charity VISA. Recently, a lot of individuals have asked if they can work a part-time job while they’re here, but that isn’t feasible.

We will assist you with the VISA application procedure if Newton Dee accepts your application.

The UK Border Agency may call you to conduct an interview regarding your reason for visiting North Dakota. Remember that you are coming to Newton Dee to live among adults who have learning disabilities, so don’t be anxious. The Border Agency must confirm that you intend to volunteer. In order to volunteer with a charity that aims to establish an inclusive community for adults with learning disabilities, you can explain that you are come to experience something new. The charity will pay for your food, housing, and some extra cash, but there is no pay.

If you need a visa from abroad, you will be responsible for paying for your own flights, the NHS surcharge (£624), and the visa itself. UK charity visas are non-renewable and have a 12-month validity period. Newton Dee will reimburse or cover your return airfare if you stay for the full 12 months.

4. Will I be trained?

Every temporary employee goes through an orientation and a continuing foundation training. Additional “on-the-job” training is provided based on your job duties. We encourage those who plan to stay with us for more than a year to participate in further training.

5. How about compensation?

Camphill Communities coworkers do not receive compensation for their labour. The community’s resources are used to meet their needs.

Financial assistance is provided to those who work with us for a year or less to pay expenses for outings, clothing, and other personal necessities. At the conclusion of your stay with us, you should bring a return ticket or enough cash for your transportation home. The cost of the return travel will be reimbursed to those who stay for a full year or more.

6. What about health insurance and coverage?

The NHS surcharge must be paid at the time of application for the UK Charity VISA. This implies that during your time in the UK, you will have NHS coverage.

7. Where am I going to reside?

Short-term employees live as members of the household and have their own room, usually in one of the houses. Our homes are cosy and equipped with contemporary amenities. Everyone in the house participates at mealtimes, just like everyone else.

Long-term members of our community typically take on domestic duties or provide assistance to some individuals with special needs who lead more independent lives. We offer accommodations that are appropriate for your needs and those of your family.

8. What tasks am I going to perform?

Almost anything that has to do with our community’s activities!

Supporting individuals with special needs in your home can include helping them with personal hygiene, taking care of their belongings, participating in the workday, and engaging in social, recreational, and educational activities.

You will likely be associated with one of our workplaces, such as the café, store, bakery, farm, market garden, craft classes, or ground maintenance, in addition to cooking, cleaning, and gardening at home.
